Andromeda Galaxy, Messier 31 is about 2.5 million light-years away from Earth. It is the nearest major galaxy to our own Milky Way Galaxy? In fact, our Galaxy is thought to look much like Andromeda. Together these two galaxies dominate the Local Group of galaxies that are gravitationally bound together. The diffuse light from Andromeda is caused by the hundreds of billions of stars that compose it. The several distinct stars that surround Andromeda‘s image are actually stars in our Galaxy. M31 is so distant it takes over two million years for light to reach us from there. While most galaxies are moving away from us, the Andromeda is destined to collide with the Milky Way Galaxy in 4 billion years.
