IC 1318 aslo known as SH2-108 spans 3 degrees in the sky which is six moon diameters. It is an emission nebula where the gas is excited by the uv radiation from nearby stars and re emits light at frequencies(colors) that are unique to the specific gas.  It is in mapped color also know as false color in the Hubble palette where hydrogen gas emission is green in the image, sulfur gas is in red, and oxygen gas is in blue. IC 1318 is the diffuse emission nebula surrounding the bright star Sadr or Gamma Cygni. This star is the center  of Cygnus’s cross also known as the Northern Cross and this image shows the Butterfly Nebula. The region contains many dark nebulae in addition to the emission diffuse nebulae.
